Mahesh Prasad Mishra, resident in Calcutta, was an average sarangi player with Banaras ancestry and a highly-inflated self-image. He was one of two sarangi players who refused to be filmed—demanding an astronomical sum of money per rag for a recording of four rags played for fifteen minutes each. I laughed and paid my respects. He also appears to have excelled at the fine art of hiding knowledge from his students. But he was a colourful character nevertheless.
