Karamwaris Khan was one of two young disciples of Ghulam Sabit Qadri of Moradabad at the time that I was learning from him in Delhi—on-and-off between 1994 to 1997. He is now a staff sarangi player at Doorsharshan (DD1), the national TV station. He appears in a few of the videos on Ghulam Sabir Qadri's page. Although this was a long time ago and he is now a much more developed sarangi player, I have given him his own page in fond memory of him. We shall see a few examples of his practice and playing in1997 when he was 18, usually along with other youngsters. He had iprogressed immensely since I first heard him three years earlier.
Our first example from June 28,1997 is of Karamwaris practising rag Bairagi alap followed by a drut bandish, accompanied by a cousin on tabla. The sitting started out with another boy on sarangi, but he was soon eclipsed.
Then he played rag Kaushi Kanada— alap followed by the popular and streamlined drut bandsih "kaanhaa karata mose barajori":
Then he started Shri rag briefly, but his cousin who was also playing sarangi didn't know it at all, so he switched to a full treatment of rag Nat Bhairav:
Again he started Shri, but he seems to have been confused about it because for a long time he played something closer to Puriya Dhanashri until Shri took root in his muind. He finished the sitting with rag Khamaj in thumri style.
