Vanraj Shastri from Ahmedabad in Gujarat is an up-and-coming player. He is unusual in that he is not from an hereditary sarangi lineage. He began with tabla and vocal music in childhood, which paved the way for a sweet vocal style on sarangi. He is also a very melodious singer. He learned sarangi technique from Dhruba Ghosh and recently has been continuing to train with Dhruba's brother Nayan Ghosh. He has wonvarious prizes and honours—for more details, see here. Vanraj, as we shall see, is well anchored in the fusion camp, and it looks like he's happy with that. Take a deep breath!
