Gana Shyam Shishodiya is the son of Bapu Lal Shishodiya. He inherited his father's job as an accompanist at the Kathak Kendra in New Delhi. I first filmed him in his late teens, on his own and receiving teaching from Bapu Lalji. He also used to accompany his father on tabla. My visits to their home in Lakshmi Nagar, Delhi (across the Yamuna river) were in January 1994 and May 1997. In 2009 and 2010 I worked with Gana Shyam's family, filming them for Growing into Music. The families of Gana Shyam and of his elder brother, the tabla player Madan Lal, live together in Lakshmi Nagar, and many of their children are learning either sarangi or tabla.
